The Swiss Confederation’s head of state is a president, elected annually by the Federal Assembly from the members of the Federal Council. Elections for the coming year were held on 6 December 2017.
Alain Berset of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland/Swiss Socialist Party (SP/PS) was elected president for 2018 on 6 December 2017 with 190 out of 210 votes. Ueli Maurer of the Swiss People’s Party/Democratic Centre Union (SVP/UDC) was elected as vice president.
Both men were scheduled to take office on 1 January 2018.
